You would be forgiven if you didn’t know there was a vote coming up on May 7. Most people equate elections with August or November, and usually with even numbered years. May elections fly under the radar for most people, and that is just the way taxing authorities like it.

Unless you live in Lake County, chances are you have a vote coming up on May 7. The state of Michigan officially refers to May 7 as an Election Day, but the vote is mostly on referendums to renew expiring millages or to create new millages. Some school districts may be electing board members and there could be some other elections to fill vacancies.

May is a popular time to put tax questions before voters. Voting is not at the forefront of people’s minds at this time, and if the bare minimum of promotion is done, an overwhelming turnout of supporters of the tax increase can be pretty much assured. Below is a list of tax jurisdictions, separated by county, that will have a vote of some sort taking place on May 7. We encourage everyone to turn out for votes in your area, and make sure your friends and neighbors know as well.
